Mesothelioma General Information

Mesothelioma general information provides details about the causes, symptoms, and effects of this cancer on the human body. Statistical mesothelioma information indicates that approximately 10,000 people die of this cancer each year. Two to three thousand new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. The average age of a patient when diagnosed is between 50 and 70 years, and this cancer affects men three to five times more often than women.

Mesothelioma information reveals that this is a rare form of cancer that develops in the plural lining of the lungs or the peritoneal lining of the stomach organs. In rare cases, mesothelioma can affect the heart or reproductive organs. The most common way to develop this cancer is by harmful inhalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers in the air.

Asbestos is a product that has been used in over 5000 products worldwide and is present in commercial and residential buildings in pipes, roofing, siding, insulation, plastics, paints, and more. People who are at risk for asbestos exposure include miners, railroad workers, ship builders, insulation manufacturers, auto industry workers, and the family members of these individuals. Approximately 1.3 million construction workers are exposed to asbestos each year. Asbestos has the potential to cause mesothelioma only when its fibers become airborne and are then inhaled or ingested.

Mesothelioma information indicates that this cancer can remain asymptomatic and undiagnosed for thirty to forty years. By the time a person is diagnosed with mesothelioma, the prognosis is generally bleak. The average survival time for a person diagnosed with mesothelioma is ten months to just over a year. Ten percent of patients survive through three years and five percent through five years, respectively. Mesothelioma information reveals that the average cost of treatment can range from four to eight hundred thousand dollars for mesothelioma patients.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma, when present, can include chest pain, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing due to fluid accumulation, chronic cough, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Mesothelioma information shows that symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can include: stomach pain, fluid accumulation (ascites), nausea, vomiting, and difficulty with bowel movements, swelling of the feet, anemia, fever, and weight loss.

Mesothelioma information indicates that at least 600,000 lawsuits have been filed against those parties who are responsible for asbestos exposure that lead to the development of fatal mesothelioma cancer. The federal government has considered creating a mesothelioma fund which would compensate mesothelioma victims who meet specific requirements. If a mesothelioma fund is set up, victims of this fatal cancer would no longer have the right to seek reparation through a lawsuit. Currently mesothelioma lawsuits can be filed against the negligent party responsible for asbestos exposure.
